We Give Thanks!

Central Virginia Watercolor Guild is online at

How often do we look at all of creation– the sky, sunrise and sunset, trees, flowers, rivers, oceans, birds, family, friends, art– and fail to see all the gifts and blessings given us?  How often do we stop and say “thank you”?  All too often, we take all these wonders for granted.

At this traditional time of the year for Thanksgiving, please take time to really look at, appreciate, and express gratitude for the glorious bounty in your life.

Two Members Get Statewide Recognition!

Two Guild members are recent recipients of awards given by the Virginia Watercolor Society (VWS):

Member Trish Crowe’s painting “Where is Alice“, the feature photo at the top of this post, recently won the Award of Distinction. Says Trish,

I am pleased to receive the award. It is more significant, I think, to know that our CVWG members are producing art that gets recognized on the state level.

Trish serves us all as Vice President and Program Coordinator for our Guild. Trish’s website is

Member Don Whitson shares that he, too, has been recognized by the VWS:

I’m thrilled to announce that I have received an Award of Excellence for my painting currently juried into the 41st Annual Virginia Watercolor Society exhibition at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond.

Member Survey Coming!

Your Board Wants Your Opinions & Ideas for 2021

While our nightly news highlights successes and setbacks with the spread of COVID-19, its treatment, and possible vaccines, in fact, it may be many more weeks and months before it is safe enough for us to restart our monthly meetings and other programs. Your elected officers and the Board of Directors continue to meet and brainstorm ideas for what the Guild can offer our members. But, frankly, we’d like your help.

Your Board has designed a short 7-question survey using the online app Survey Monkey to gather your thoughts and ideas. We’ll be sending the survey to all members to your email address. Please keep an eye on your email inbox (and SPAM/JUNK folders in the event our survey gets routed there).

Please take 2 minutes to share your opinions, thoughts, and ideas with us so we can see how best to meet our members’ needs and desires in the coming months.

Donna Koutrakos and Linda Verhagen, Presidents

Online Resources

One of my personal favorite artist-mentors continues to be The Mind of Watercolor by artist/designer Steve Mitchell. Since 2014, Steve has used the web and YouTube videos to spread his particular, offbeat approach to producing great art and helping some of us would-be dabblers. You can view his introductory YouTube “issue” at this link, visit his website, follow him on Facebook, or connect by any of the other methods he publishes on each of those sites. I know that at least one other CVWG member also follows Steve’s work as well.

Strathmore Artists’ Papers is out with their summer newsletter and they have a free online “Creative Watercoloring” class starting on September 8. You can view their news at this link.

As always, you are invited to contribute images of your art to our Gallery, become our next Featured Member Artist, contribute and article, share a link you find of interest, etc. It is simple…just send our Webmaster an email.

Mid-Summer Update

A Letter from Our President and Board of Directors

The Guild’s President, Linda Verhagen, recently sent a letter to all members with key updates on our 2020 operations, exhibitions, and other business given the ongoing impacts from the coronavirus pandemic. The letter begins…

After a Zoom meeting on July 27 where some difficult decisions had to be made, the CVWG Board and I are sorry to let you know that with the exception of the Small Works Show in Crozet, all other planned activities of the guild have had to be cancelled for the remainder of 2020 due the Covid-19.

You can read the entire letter at this link.

The Board hopes all our members and followers the best of health and we look forward to resuming our usual Guild activities as soon as possible.

Member News

A special callout to member Dianne Phillips for sharing her painting “The Black Pearl” featured above and in our Member Directory. Dianne has been particularly patient with getting this added to our site.

Member Linda Abbey tells us that several of her flower paintings and drawings are being shown in Fellini’s Italian Restaurant on West Market St in Charlottesville since their “soft opening” last month.  Fellini’s just opened for inside dining every Thursday, Friday and Saturday– reservations, social distancing , and masks are required– from 5pm to 9pm. Fellini’s continues to offer take-out and delivery to select areas of Cville. You can view more of Linda’s work on her web site.

Member Janice (Bunny) Creasy reminds us that good advice and mentoring in our water media never goes out of style. She sent in the following three newspapers clippings from 2018 from the Fluvanna Review. Those of you with sharp eyes will notice another of our members, Bill Snow, as one of the leaders in these workshops. CVWG continues to be blessed with great members and mentors!

As always, we are interested in featuring your art in our member gallery, highlighting your activities during these “interesting times”, featuring you and your art in our Member Gallery, news, an online resource you have found, or any other item of interest. We need more members willing to show for one of our Featured Member Artist series. Simply email our Webmaster to begin a collaboration.
