Book Sale

“Rocky Shore” from VWS 2003 show

Here is some background on the recent book sale, held at the July 2018 meeting. Carolyn Yager’s friend, Gerrie Brown, was an artist from Harrisonburg who died in 2014. Carolyn cataloged her extensive library of art books and offered them for sale to benefit CVWG. $143 was raised.

Carolyn writes:

“She was adored, and was one of the most genuinely kind and generous people ever. Artistically, she preferred abstract work, particularly collage. However, she was known for her incredible watercolor magnolias , which you could virtually smell when you looked at one of her paintings of them.

“She and Dick ran Brown’s Pharmacies in Elkton and had three daughters, one of which has MS, one who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in her 40s, and Anne, who works at the Harrisonburg Community Foundation.

“Gerrie taught a class with Nancy Stark for years. When Nancy left the area, Gerrie decided she would rather be part of the group, not its leader, and she painted every Thursday morning with the approximately 10 artists who comprised the original class until she fell ill with vasculitis, an autoimmune disease. This group still meets every Thursday morning to paint.

“Despite efforts of the best doctors, the disease took a terrible toll on Gerrie’s body, and she passed away at Sunnyside approximately three years ago. She is still sorely missed by all who knew her.

“Gerrie was a founding member of SVWS, A signature member of VWS and NWS, but to my knowledge was never a member of CVWG.”

Thank you, Carolyn, for sharing Gerrie’s books with us!
